When we were told that our son was showing traits of Autism, our world crumbled. We had already got contacts & details of a clinic abroad, however after making a few phone calls we were told that there is a collaborative practice in Malta with the same high standards and that it was the best one on the island. This is run by Jacqueline Abela DeGiovanni, and her immediate care and understanding confirmed that this was truly the best of the best. We have been going for over a year, and not only did our son make such a good progress and come a long way, but we feel like we’re being treated as family. They guide us step by step on how to deal with our son emotionally and physically and point us to the right directions continuously. For us giving our child the best possible treatment is our only goal, and when we chose Hand in Hand we sealed our deal. All the therapists were available for us within the same building, which included speech therapy, occupational therapy, ABA therapy and a child psychologist.
Hand in Hand was recommended by our son’s school since students before had used their services and were very pleased . We decided to give it a try with our son who was only seen at CDAU and was being diagnosed with traits / mild autism. We started with early intervention sessions and our son was assessed by the tutor to see what kind of programme will be adequate for him. It was a tough time for us as a family , we didn’t know quite right how to handle it . Hand in Hand also offered us their service of home and school visits to help us out and it surely did . At least whenever we had a question we had someone to turn to and the tutors always answered our queries and were gladly to help out. They gave us ideas that we could work on at home , where we could find certain links on the Internet etc. Our son took a liking to all the tutors and he improved in many things. Lately we started speech therapy sessions and occupational therapy also which was offered by Hand in Hand since we were seeing that our son was absorbing a lot at the moment and could improve even more. We preferred that he is familiar with the place therefore that helped out also that he goes weekly to the same place. These past 2 years have been a roller coaster ride for us ! But with help we managed to get through and hopefully we will continue to do so by the services offered at Hand in Hand.
When we got the news that our daughter has speech delay and communication difficulties which resulted in self frustration and behavioural issues, we were shocked and devastated. However, as soon as we discovered Hand in Hand and our daughter started attending the 1-to-1 and group sessions with the most dedicated and professional people, the changeover in our daughter was truly amazing. Not only she drastically improved her communication skills and behaviour , but nowadays she looks keenly forward to learn new things and warmly socialize with other kids so naturally. Hand in Hand is the place where you can find professional support, personalized plan for your son/daughter, all of which is carried out by the most dedicated and professional personnel under a family oriented environment.
I realised that my daughter’s communication skills were not developing well so I brought her to Jacqueline at Hand in Hand when she was around 20 months old. There was no eye contact before, and no understanding of basic requests. The progress I have seen is incredible – her eye contact is constant, even with strangers, and she understands what I’m trying to tell her. The latest amazing news is that at 26 months she is now starting to repeat words. I honestly recommend early intervention to anyone who thinks that their child needs some help in developing certain skills. Through the playing patterns that Jackie has taught me, I got to see a difference in development that I was terrified would not happen. Early Intervention has helped our daughter to flourish, I just regret not starting earlier.
